Insurance to protect farming operations
Helps farmers manage big income drops from production losses or rising costs. Provides financial support during tough market conditions.
A margin-based program that protects Canadian producers against large declines in farming income due to production loss, increased costs, and market conditions. It generally covers 80% of eligible losses (90% for the 2025 program year) when the production margin falls more than 30% below the historical reference margin. The maximum payment limit is $3 million, temporarily doubled to $6 million for the 2025 program year. The program offers interim and targeted advance payments for early access to funds. Optional features, like tax-aligned reference margins and coverage notices, are available for producers in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

Other Criteria: Must farm in Canada, Must file an income tax return reporting farming income (loss) to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by the final filing deadline for the program year (exemption for Status Indians farming on a reserve), Must have filed farming income (loss) for tax purposes for all reference years in which you farmed, Must complete a minimum of six consecutive months of farming activity and a production cycle, unless you experienced a disaster, Must enrol in the program, pay your fee and file a form by the applicable deadlines, May need to comply with certain conditions set by your province or territory to receive a benefit, Participants include: individual producers, partners in a partnership, corporations, co-operatives, communal organizations, landlords in a joint venture (with specific conditions), estates, trusts, limited partnerships.
