Subsidies for food and essentials in the North
Financial support (subsidy) for registered retailers, suppliers, country food processors, food banks, charitable organizations, and local food growers to sell or distribute eligible food and non-food essentials at reduced prices to residents in 124 isolated northern communities. The subsidy amount is calculated monthly based on the subsidy level ($/kg) and weight of eligible items.

Other Criteria: New retailers, suppliers and producers encouraged to apply, Retailers operating stores in eligible communities selling eligible food and essential items, Suppliers located outside of eligible communities selling food to northern retailers, eligible social institutions (e.g., schools, daycares), eligible commercial establishments (e.g., restaurants, hotels), or individuals in eligible communities, Country food processors/distributors registered, inspected or licensed by government, producing approved-for-export food, and located in an eligible community, Food banks and charitable organizations serving eligible communities, without profit, Local food growers (greenhouses, community gardens) located in eligible communities producing food for local sale or distribution, Eligible communities must be isolated, lack year-round surface transportation (excluding specific freeze/break-up periods), meet territorial/provincial definition of a northern community, have an airport/post office/grocery store, and a year-round population, Capacity to submit claims and documentation electronically, Plans for program visibility and transparency for consumers, Agreement to support Nutrition Education Initiatives, Agreement to provide access for audits and certify subsidy passed to consumers, Agreement to conduct business respecting Government of Canada Values and Ethics, Agreement to terms and conditions of Contribution Agreement, Agreement to provide timely and complete reporting and price data, Suppliers considered on: Northern shipping experience, ability to provide tailored nutrition needs food, forecast of shipments, financial stability and sustainability, Small retailers/local growers without a CRA business number can provide a letter of support from local government or Band Administrator
