Funding for rural transit solutions in rural communities
Federal contribution funding to acquire tangible capital assets, such as vehicles and supporting infrastructure (e.g., bus shelters, charging stations), for public transit solutions. The program supports the development and expansion of locally driven transit in rural, remote, Indigenous, and Northern communities, including fixed-routes, on-demand, and micromobility services. Funding aims to increase transit use, contribute to climate change mitigation, and improve options for equity-deserving groups. Maximum federal contribution is $10 million for experienced organizations, or $250,000 for less experienced organizations. Cost-sharing varies: up to 100% for Territorial Governments / Indigenous communities, up to 80% for recipients in a province, and up to 60% for provincial governments.

Other Criteria: Legal entity capable of entering into legally binding agreements, In good standing with the Government of Canada, Must fall into one of the following categories: a provincial or territorial government; a municipal or regional government; a public sector body; a federally or provincially incorporated not-for-profit organization or charity; an Indigenous benefiting organization or recipient, Project must meet at least one of these objectives: increase use of public transit relative to car travel; contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience; improve public transit options for all, especially equity-deserving groups, For federal contribution over $250,000 (up to $10 million): at least two years of transit experience OR a public transit feasibility study completed after January 1, 2020, For federal contribution up to $250,000: less than two years of transit experience AND no recent public transit feasibility study, Cumulative cap of $10 million for applicants with multiple ongoing Rural Transit Solutions Fund projects at a given time, Must not serve populations greater than 150,000 living mainly in the urban area of a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)
